While 10 million standard pennies were struck at the Philadelphia Mint for this General Mills campaign, an estimated 10% (around 1 million) were accidentally struck using proof coin dies.
This created the Wide AM variety:The Check: Look at the word AMERICA on the reverse (back) side of the coin.The Difference: On a normal penny, the letters A and M are almost touching (Close AM). On the rare variety, there is a clear, visible space between the A and the M (Wide AM).The Catch: You cannot easily see the back of the coin without removing it from the cardboard. Taking it out destroys the official "Cheerios Promotion" status handled by grading services like PCGS or NGC.
